Big House

Hello Big House dwellers!

A bit of a trombone feature week - first the extraordinary Matt Seddon with The Sidewinders at The Jailhouse. He must surely be a name to look out for, such virtuosic talent and musical sensibility at such a young age. Wow! And then the charming Romulo Dias joining Vamos Muchachos at South Stoke last night for a smooth and enchanting night of Latin music. Makes me want to get my trombone out again…

Meanwhile, here we go hurtling towards October. Someone has their foot on the pedal and I'd like them to let up a bit! A couple of great looking films coming up, the first of our jazz brunches at Sullington Manor and a must-see tribute to Horace Silver coming up at The Jailhouse.

A few tickets remaining for Bacharach at The Minerva https://www.cft.org.uk/events/burt-bacharach and plenty at Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton on 24th November https://www.hangerfarm.co.uk/whats-on/burt-bacharach-his-life-story-in-words-and-music/

Jazz at The Jailhouse featuring Alex Bondonno's Tribute to Horace Silver

A stellar jazz sextet performs a musical tribute to the jazz composer and pianist, Horace Silver. This legend of Hard Bop and founder of the Jazz Messengers is celebrated by Brighton Jazz Mafia. Pianist Joss Peach takes the role of Silver with vocals from Sara Oschlag.

Alex Bondonno (saxes) and Chris Coull (trumpet) lead the audience through the musical story of Silver's life, his compositions and his interpretations by other iconic performers. This all-star band re-ignites the magic of one of the greatest jazz composers, keeping alive the wonderful music of Silver. Hardened jazz fan or not, this evening will entertain and delight.

Arundel Choral Society presents The Dream Of Gerontius by Edward Elgar

The piece is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work, indeed considered by some to be his masterpiece.

In 1865 Cardinal Newman wrote a poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ dealing with the questions about afterlife and God. Elgar’s chance to set Gerontius to music came at the age of forty-two with a commission for the 1900 Birmingham Triennial Festival.

So there we are - something for everyone there. Or everything for someone?
Have a lovely week :-)

Best wishes, Mike
